Two factors are better than one

Two-factor authentication is mechanism for verifying the identity of a user by using two different pieces of information. The most common methods rely on having the user confirm his or her identity by producing a password as well as a smartcard or a token.

Two-factor authentication for virtual infrastructure is understandably in high demand. Privileged access to the hypervisor puts every virtual asset–servers, switches, etc.–at risk of potential compromise, so naturally most organizations want to be highly confident in their confirmation of those user's identities. To date, however, configuring two-factor authentication on the hypervisor has been a costly endeavor, requiring the complex configuration of Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) across all hosts individually.
